What is the best type of in ground swimming pool
What is the best type of in-ground swimming pool?
Every builder will tell you that his pool construction method is the best. I always tell my clients to look in the phone book and see what types of pools are available.
In most cases, you will see that “Gunite” pools, those that are made from steel reinforced concrete, are represented two-to-one over any other type. There are certainly other types of pools that are easier to build, so why would so many contractors choose this method?
Why We Think Gunite Pools Are Best
The answer is durability and freedom of design. Gunite allows you to design any size, shape, or depth. It allows you to attach a spa, or water feature that is structurally sound. In my opinion, Gunite is the only permanent pool available. Fiberglass and vinyl-liner pools are subject to failures that cannot be acceptably repaired.
Beware of Fiberglass & Vinyl
Those that sell the other types often use scare tactics, promising that your gunite pool will crack and that it will be impossible to maintain because the surface is too rough. What they won’t tell you is that fiberglass can also crack, and vinyl will eventually become damaged by ultraviolet light. The difference is that there is no practical way to repair gel-coat so that it is acceptable and that draining a vinyl pool to replace the liner can endanger the structure of the pool.
Gunite is the only construction method that is not reliant on the water pressure pushing outward to neutralize the soil pressure pushing inward on the pool structure. Draining a vinyl or fiberglass pool creates soil pressures that exceed the strength of the pool structure.
