Flow control valves 101
Getting to know your flow control valves
One of the more technical mechanisms that you will find in your swimming pool pump comes in the form of the flow control valve. There is actually more than one of these flow control valves, and they control how the intake portion of the water flow is handled. The valves are adjustable and they are important part of maintaining a swimming pool.
Water circulation is important for your swimming pool, and that is why you will need to properly maintain the flow control valves along with the skimmers and the filtration of the swimming pool pump. All of these parts work together to circulate and properly chlorinate your swimming pool’s water.
2 important tips you should know:
Tip #1: Never turn them off
The first thing you should keep in mind is that you should never place all of the flow control valves in the off position. If you do this, then you are stopping all water flow to the swimming pool pump. When that happens, a pool pump can be damaged to the point that it has to be replaced, and it could cost you a great deal of money.
Tip #2: Fine tune your water flow
Instead of turning all of the valves off, you can control them to fine tune the water flow of your swimming pool. When they are set to full open, you will be getting the maximum intake flow into the pumps. However, the key is not leaving the valves in full open, but adjusting them so that they work in conjunction with both the skimmers and the main drains to create the perfect water flow to pump, to filter, and then back into the swimming pool.
Although chances are, you will not need to; you can take the flow control valves apart and clean them should they pose any problem to you. Once you have done so, they should return to proper working order so that you can continue controlling the water circulation flow in your swimming pool.
