There is no greater way to create a dramatic impact to the backyard to add sizzle than with fire and water. Combining backyard water features with a fire pit or fireplace can create a captivating effect with both elements, just as we did with this recent pool project in New Orleans.
The two opposing elements of fire and water can create a striking experience in the backyard. The water’s reflective properties tend to excite the senses when viewing the reflection of the fire. Checkout this photo:
For decades, water has been the essential component when designing an exceptional backyard landscape. Only recently has the element of fire been added to the creative design. In the last few years, it has become a hot trend in high-end outdoor design. Like watching the water rippling on the surface, the snapping and flickering of fire offers both a soothing and relaxing sensation.
A Practical Option
Adding fire to the design also adds a practical component to the landscape. It offers both light and warmth to the backyard and enhances the appearance of the nighttime landscape. The addition of fire also maximizes the potential of the backyard by extending outdoor activities into the cooler seasons of fall and early spring.
The addition of fire into a backyard design first started as a simple fire pit that was typically nothing more than a stack of rocks with an emitting flame. Today’s outdoor designs offer creatively designed fire pits, formal fireplaces and other decorative fire features crafted out of cast limestone, stone and travertine.
A Focal Point
It is true that installing a custom fireplace is priced significantly higher than a fire pit. However, many homeowners see the advantage of spending the extra cost because of the benefits it provides to the outdoor living area. In fact, many recognize that the addition of a fireplace or expansive fire pit offers the ideal focal point and defines the outdoor area.
When fire pits were first added to backyard landscape design, they served more as a simple gathering place to sit, talk and spend time together. Today however, a stunning decorative fireplace or fire pit can create a dramatic visually appealing defining point in the overall creative design. It offers both a sense of style and elegance, while bringing out natural primal attractions.
A Romantic Side
Creating a little fire in the backyard is an ideal way to stimulate anyone’s romantic side. A fireplace or fire pit offers an intimate environment for a romantic fireside chat. It also provides the right amount of light to enjoy a quick late-night dip in the backyard pool. The twinkling glow of the flickering light creates the ideal mood for getting closer.
Adding the Features
When creating the perfect outdoor design, consider blending both a water feature and the fire feature together. Position the fire feature in a location that offers the most appeal to the outdoor landscape design. Consider using gas and gas rings to create the ideal fire effect that enhances the landscaping of the yard. This way, the flame can be easily adjusted from a low romantic rosy glow, to a roaring fire in a large fireplace.
The visual appeal of a fire in a fireplace reflected on the pool water can be enjoyed both from outdoors, and indoors looking out. By placing the fireplace features in a position that is easily viewed from the home’s interior, the reflective qualities and aesthetic beauty of the combination of water and fire can be enjoyed from indoors.
The same amount of safety considered for installing a pool in the backyard should be given to installing a fire feature. Keep the fire away from traffic areas and take a variety of other outdoor elements into consideration including prevailing winds.
