The Benefits and Techniques of Water Yoga
Water yoga offers all of the benefits of yoga combined with the perks of aquatic exercise. Plus, it’s a great way to beat the heat!
New Orleans is known for its balmy climate, and sometimes that makes working out in the heat a challenge. Water yoga presents a comfortable and effective option for those looking to get in shape while staying cool.
What Is Water Yoga?
Water yoga combines the strength, balance, and flexibility training of traditional yoga with aquatic exercise to achieve a cooler workout that is easier on the joints. Because the exercises are performed in a swimming pool, the ability to float in the water makes it much easier to achieve flexibility in certain poses as training continues.
Benefits of Water Yoga
In addition to finding more ease, comfort, and flexibility through yoga, water yoga practitioners can enjoy all the health benefits of swimming. This includes increased flexibility, mindfulness, muscle toning, and a higher level of balance. Water yoga is particularly beneficial for those who experience joint pain or limited mobility, as the water offers a comfortable, safe space to exercise without performing any joint-pounding activities, like running.
Water Yoga Beginner’s Sequence
Virtually any yoga sequence can be performed in the water, so long as one’s head stays in the air. Beginners can try this basic sequence, performing each pose for 60-120 seconds. Begin by standing balanced on one leg, with the alternate leg forward in the water. Then, move into the Sky Archer Pose, holding the hands together above the head and leaning to the right and left. Next, move into the Dekasana, or Airplane Pose, where the torso is extended horizontally above the water and one leg is extended behind, making a “T” shape with the body. Finally, relax into the Brahmandasana, or Cosmic Egg pose, pulling the knees into the chest and floating to the surface of the water.
