The Concept of Vanishing Edge and Infinity Edge Swimming Pools
You might’ve heard of vanishing edge or infinity edge swimming pools. These are seen at some of the most elegant resorts in the world and, quite often, in locations where the vanishing edge of the swimming pool creates an incredible effect. For instance, the swimming pools are sometimes installed on rooftop recreation areas at very expensive resorts, where they give the appearance that the water simply drops off into the air and were swimmers are suspended in a rather magical looking place, creating a magnificent effect.
But don’t be mistaken, these pools are not just for the rich and famous. There is a tremendous variety of ways that these swimming pools can be used to create wonderful effects for metro New Orleans homes.
How They Work
An infinity edge swimming pool is created by way of a spillover feature that makes it appear as if the water simply bleeds off into another body of water, into the sky or into the landscape itself. The spillover catches water that falls over the edge of the pool, runs it through pumps and circulates it back into the swimming pool. For the swimmer, however, it appears as if the edge of the pool simply doesn’t exist and that the water, just as the name implies, simply vanishes.
This design can work with a variety of metro New Orleans homes and landscapes. In landscapes where there is a great deal of green space, an infinity pool can be constructed so that it appears that the water blends in with the sky and the horizon, creating a literally infinite looking feature.
In landscapes where another body of water or even a canal is present, which is so common for our area, the swimming pool can be constructed so that, from a swimmer’s perspective, the waters appear to blend, even though they may be separated by quite a bit of distance.
The result can be truly amazing. Rather than being in a swimming pool that is obviously limited by the edges of the structure, the swimmer gets the experience of swimming in a pool that has no end whatsoever. This effect can create a very relaxing experience for the swimmer and an incredibly beautiful architectural feature for the home.
Before starting on this type of project, the contractor will have to assess the geological features and the architectural features that they will be working with and around when building the swimming pool. This can be a very complex process and it definitely requires a great deal of skill to make a proper assessment. You’ll want an experienced contractor to do this work. Not only do they need to make certain that the architectural features and the landscape are taken into account properly, they need to construct the pool in a way that the infinity edge gives the best possible illusion.
